MINNEAPOLIS — On a day when he was scheduled to field questions about new point guard Ricky Rubio, Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn couldn't avoid the inevitable question about where he stands with head coach Kurt Rambis.
Kahn said Friday he and Rambis met for four hours Thursday and were scheduled to meet again Friday to discuss Rambis' future as the team's coach.
In two seasons with Rambis at the helm, the Timberwolves finished 15-67 during the 2009-10 season and 17-65 last year. Kahn noted Friday that the style of play he hoped Minnesota would institute hasn't happened yet during Rambis' time on the job.
"Not that Ricky is a symbol of this, but since I've arrived, we've intended to play a style of basketball on both sides of the ball that is intended to be open-court, exciting, fast-break," said Kahn, whose team holds the No. 2 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft. "For whatever reason, we haven't achieved that style yet, although we've done some good things as part of it."
Kahn said that he had Rambis file a report in mid-May on the topic of how the head coach planned to change things to fit with the players the Wolves have on the roster.
"That wasn't the only thing I wanted Kurt to address," Kahn said. "I really asked him to be as comprehensive and as thorough as possible. He just handed me the report or sent it to me over the last weekend. I told him and I assured him we would meet before any decision was made. This was really the quickest day we could meet.
"We're going to meet for another couple hours today, and that's all I have to say. We're in a process."
